Do you suffer from ‘the blues’, periodically or always?  If so, you – or a loved one – may not be depressed enough to warrant medical treatment.  Yet ongoing unhappiness is proven to be threatening your physical health — for example, both your heart health, and your immune system’s ability to fight off ailments such as the common cold.

What are ‘the blues’ about?  Lower job satisfaction, lower satisfaction with your marriage and other personal relationships, more anxiety issues, less control over your life, lower wellbeing than other people – these are symptoms reported by people who suffer low-grade depression.

Research indicates  that about 75% of such cases will devolve into full-blown major depression if the symptoms are not recognised and dealt with.

As major depression is typically associated with thoughts of death or suicide, and deep feelings of hopelessness and  helplessness, it’s critical to first recognize any risk factors.

This is the warning from Shelley Carson, an associate at Harvard University’s Department of Psychology.  Shelley co-authored the book, ‘Almost Depressed:  Is My (or My Loved One’s) Unhappiness a Problem?’ in which she sets out strategies proven in clinical studies to help alleviate symptoms.

‘How would I know?’

5 Symptoms of ‘almost depressed’

5  symptoms of being in the ‘almost depressed’ category are:

  1. Inability to enjoy things that you used to consider fun
  2. Being easily irritated and overreacting to minor incidents
  3. Regularly finding excuses to avoid socializing
  4. ‘Going through the motions’, feeling like each day is a struggle
  5. Feeling overstressed, thinking you’ll never catch up with all your to-do’s

Along with suggesting commonsense strategies such as exercise, enough sleep, outdoor activities, more sun exposure, improving social networks and others, Shelley cites ‘improved self-care’ for stress release.

Why EFT tapping?

Even one hour of  applied Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT tapping with an experienced EFT practitione (who at the same time  is also teaching you how to tap for yourself) has been proved to lower the stress hormone cortisol by a whopping 24% (traditional therapies come in around 14%.)  EFT calms the brain’s fear centre, and rewires unwanted reactions.

International specialist in natural healthcare Dr. Joseph Mercola states that his favorite method of emotional cleansing is Emotional Freedom Techniques, a form of psychological acupressure.

Dr. Mercola says, ‘For most people with depression symptoms, this is a fascinating technique that you can learn to do effectively on your own to relieve symptoms.  In fact, it’s so easy that children are learning it.

‘(But) if you have severe depression, I would strongly urge you to consult with a mental health professional who is also an EFT practitioner.

‘Self-treatment for serious mental health issues is NOT recommended, because although it is easy to learn EFT and far less expensive to do it yourself, it is nearly always better to work with a professional.  It’s truly an art that takes years of practice to develop the skill to successfully address deep-seated, significant issues.

‘I believe EFT is one of the most powerful mind-body techniques.’
