‘You are not controlled by your genes — you are controlled by your beliefs,’ says a pioneer of the new biology, cell biologist Dr. Bruce Lipton.  And if you don’t like what you believe, you can probably change it, through the acupressure-and-mindfulness technique called Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT tapping).

Dr. Lipton is the author of ‘The Biology of Belief’ which explains the scientific discipline of epigenetics. (He endorses EFT and other energy therapies.)  Modern research reveals that the popular idea that we are victims of our genes (genetic determinism) is largely wrong and was never proved.  Actually, genes give us our  physical characteristics, but do not control our behaviour.

The reality is that your thoughts and emotions are constantly switching your genes on or off, sometimes in seconds.

A scientific study on a 1-hour EFT session found that 72 genes were beneficially affected.  These genes involved learning and memory, along with physical effects such as tumor  and inflammation suppression.

How to change your mind

Rather than rigidly controlling your life, your genes are now known to be always responding to their environment, both outer and inner environments — in this case, your consciousness, your attitudes and emotions about yourself, others, life itself.

Emotional Freedom Techniques is a stress relief practice whose basics you could learn in a few minutes.  Its techniques of focussed acupressure (fingertapping on key body points used in acupuncture) release stress  gently and often quickly, on emotional, mental and physical levels.  As stress leaves, your system evolves to a better mental perspective on the topic or problem you were tapping about.

What do you believe about yourself?

A belief is a thought you’ve thought over and over and over, until it feels like the truth, so you don’t think to question it.  It can be positive or negative.

So,  what do you feel is true about you, that you don’t like?

EXAMPLES

Deep down, do you suspect or think that you are:

–unlovable, or
— a misfit , or
— there’s something wrong with you, or

— you’re not good enough…etc.

‘Huh? That’s only a belief? But it’s true – – ‘

Exposed to EFT scrutiny, heaps of negative ideas about ourselves prove to be only beliefs we have picked up, especially in our first 6 years.  If they are not working for us, we can change these attitudes through EFT tapping techniques, so that we start to glimpse the real truth about ourselves, and start to live from that  perspective instead.

As an EFT practitioner, I constantly help people improve their self-confidence issues by discovering specific negative beliefs that are holding them back, ideas that  adversely affect their behaviour and life choices.  After all, if you secretly believe that you can’t do something, you’re not even going to try, are you?

When we see what each specific belief is, I show clients and students how to reduce or eliminate such non-truths. These people’s experience  – and millions of others worldwide — demonstrates that spontaneously, when stresses are released, better ideas naturally take their place.  When you have more confidence, your thoughts and actions will be different.

A great adventure

Uncovering who you could be is a great adventure.  You could start immediately..  While some of the problems caused by what you’ve been thinking can shift quickly, other beliefs may need to take longer because they are multi-layered. But if you’ve been blaming your genes and feeling that you’re stuck forever with the way you are (‘That’s how I am’) , you’re in for surprises.

Changing stressful ideas about yourself means that you will see new and better effects play out for real in your daily life.
